ASPSonic e-business modules
AspSonic is a suite of web modules – individual website components that are both feature-rich and user friendly. The aspSonic modules form a set of building blocks for websites that enable companies to take a phased approach to e-business - implementing modules as and when required.
The modules are already in use within a range of websites and have proved very popular. This tried and tested technology, can be seamlessly integrated into existing websites or used to build a website from scratch.
The current range of aspSonic modules includes:

The modules provide companies with the tools to improve communications with customers and staff, increase customer satisfaction, promote and sell their products to new markets and compete more effectively in an increasingly competitive environment.
The Security module is used to manage public (visitor) and private (administrator/user) access to the website via a password-controlled administration area. This enables a site administrator to delegate different access levels to authorised users according to their needs. For example, the marketing manager may have full access and be able to add content to any area of the site, but the HR manager may have restricted access – enabling them to create and update content on the Vacancies page only.
The site administrator can also restrict access to public areas of the site (eg, for subscription based content, client extranets, etc). A simple, easy-to-use registration process enables visitors to set up their own passwords to enter the restricted access areas of the site.
The security module also includes powerful user and visitor activity tracking features:
These control mechanisms provide organisations with true peace of mind - safe in the knowledge that the integrity of their website is protected from unauthorised access.
The Content Editor enables authorised members of staff to create and maintain the content of web pages. The module – accessed by a secure password system – uses an HTML editor to provide flexible formatting of content and allows images, e-mail addresses or hyperlinks to other website pages to be embedded at any point within the text. Content can be arranged on the page using various style and layout options. A range of font styles are available, text can be emboldened or italicised and there is a wide selection of text and background colours to choose from.
This functionality provides the ultimate in flexibility and freedom to enable organisations to take full control of their websites. Any authorised member of staff can quickly and easily create & edit content – to achieve exactly the visual impact they desire.
As a stand-alone module the Content Editor has proved extremely popular, introducing an element of dynamic functionality to an otherwise static website. The Content Editor is so easy to use that no programming skills are required. Updates to the Home page, Contact page, etc can now be undertaken by any member of staff – saving both time and money.
The Document Manager encompasses the functionality of an on-line filing system, making documents accessible via your website 24hrs a day. It can be used in a wide range of applications: on-line document distribution system (eg, minutes of meetings), a 24hr virtual research resource for members, library of company brochures, procedures, etc.
Documents can be stored and presented to the site visitor under category headings. A drop-down menu at the top of the page will allow visitors to view documents by category – facilitating location of relevant material. All the popular document formats (including MP3, and AVI)can be uploaded and can be viewed on-line or downloaded for local storage. It is possible to allocate an archive date beyond which the document is not available as a current document but is accessible by the visitor via an archive function. This ensures that old and out-of-date documents are automatically transferred to the archive area. Category definition and the upload of documents are managed via a password controlled administration area. The site administrator has control over the structure and content of the Document Manager and can view data on the download frequency for each document.
The News module enables an organisation to present the latest news and other notices to site visitors. Site administrators can pre-define News categories under which news items can be classified. The News page will display a list of headlines and summaries within specified categories, making it easy for visitors to identify articles of interest. When a visitor clicks on a news headline the full article is displayed. At the bottom of each article is a button to return the reader to the News headlines page.
Each news article consists of a title, summary, author name, body and date. Images can be inserted into the body of the text at any point. For each news article added, an archive date can be specified. On this date the article will automatically be transferred from the News page through to an archive area. A link is provided on the News page to enable visitors to access archived news items. Access to the News user administration area is password controlled, ensuring that only authorised personnel can add news articles to the site.
As well as presenting news, the functionality offered by this module lends itself to a whole host of other applications. To date it has been used in a number of imaginative ways - to display reviews, recipes and product information, to name a few.
Visitors to the site can be encouraged to register for newsletters. The visitor is able to specify which (pre-defined) categories of news they wish to receive. The Newsletter subscription process is separate from the user access registration and enables visitors to set up and change passwords as required. Newsletters can be sent in plain text or HTML format and distribution is managed via a password controlled administration area. A newsletter can be distributed to registered groups based on selected preferences or to specified user groups. If the aspSonic News and Document Manager modules are also deployed in the website it is possible to create links within the newsletter to news articles and documents on the website.
The module enables links to be presented by category and provides for a link name, a brief description, logo and link to a specified web page address. The linked URL can be opened in either the same window, or a new window with the ability to specify a width and height. The system will record the number of times a specific link is connected, enabling an organisation to analyse referrals to other sites. Links can be added or deleted by any authorised member of staff via a secure user administration area.
The calendar module provides a flexible mechanism for displaying comprehensive details of all your events/activities. Whether it is used to provide an internal calendar for your organisation or to promote events to your target audience, the calendar module enables you to provide a wealth of information about your meetings, workshops, seminars, conferences, etc.
The calendar offers four different views to the visitor:
§ Monthly view
§ Weekly view
§ Daily view
§ Pop-up/Mini view
The monthly view includes controls that allow visitors and users to move from month to month, and can even be set up to filter events categories shown via a drop down menu. It is also possible to configure the calendar without the filter but with categorised events allocated to separate calendars – allowing different areas of the site to use the same calendar functionality but displaying different event information based on category.
The weekly and daily views show the data in a much more detailed format. Information on a specific event is displayed by double-clicking on the event in the calendar. This view only displays the information fields that contain data, ensuring the presentation of event information is logical and uncluttered.
The pop-up view or ‘mini-cal’ is a small monthly
calendar that allows visitors to navigate rapidly around the calendar – clicking
on relevant days to display events for that day.
The slide show is used to display a series of images that rotate as the page is viewed. The advantage of this is that visitors can view a wide range of images without having to scroll down endlessly or flick between web pages. This module provides a truly dynamic feel to a website and is particularly effective for displaying product ranges or other visual information. An unlimited number of images can be uploaded via FTP and the delay period between the rotating images can be set by the administrator.
This sophisticated module provides organisations with the tools to construct on-line questionnaires. It is flexible enough to create individually structured questionnaires to meet the requirements of different data collection exercises. A complete range of different response formats are available, including radio buttons for multiple-choice answers and free-text boxes. Responses are collated in a database format for easy analysis and summary results are available for download in CSV format.
The questionnaire functionality can be used for a whole host of applications. It is ideal for obtaining feedback from staff, customers or members alike. Other uses might include research projects, application forms, or as a communication mechanism to facilitate consultation with the public and/or partner organisations.
This module enables you to construct on-line polls to get instant feedback from visitors to your site. The poll is easy to create and provides both your organisation and the visitor with real-time results. A start date and end date can be specified during which time visitors will be able to take part in the poll. You can also specify which statistics will be presented when a visitor submits a response and how graphical information will be displayed.
On-line polls are great indicators of visitors’ views and behaviour and can be rapidly set up and analysed. The module allows you to set up an unlimited number of polls on your website.
As the name suggests, the Notice Board provides an area on your site where members of staff or visitors can post notices or items of interest. Notices are stored and presented to the site visitor in pre-defined categories. A drop-down menu at the top of the page will allow visitors to view notices by category – enabling them to quickly pinpoint notices of potential interest. The notice board is moderated by a nominated member of staff to protect the integrity of the site.
aspSonic modules are created using Active Server Pages (ASP) in combination with Visual Basic (VB) COM objects. All data is hosted independently in a SQL Server database. We will arrange the hosting, installation, setup and maintence of the ASPsonic modules.
