Cross Browser Compatibility
Like there are many different types of people using the Internet, there are also many different computers, web browsers and operating systems used to connect to the Internet.
And since each computer, operating system and web browser behaves in a different way your website may look fine on a PC running Windows 98 and Internet Explorer 5, but on a PC running Windows 98 and Netscape Communicator 5, it may look very different.
Essentially the computer and operating system used is irrelevant. Mac's however do display colours a little different. But depending on the web browser used and the version of that web browser, the same web page can be interpreted very differently. This is because different web browsers are compatible with different technologies and some have different syntax for the same technologies. Therefore it is important that your website is cross-browser compatible. i.e. It works in as many different browsers, versions, computers and operating systems as possible.
It is often the case that many websites have two versions - one for Internet Explorer and one for Netscape. We try not to do this as it increases the budget and the time taken to implement the website and is not really necessary. Instead we make our website compatible with all three browsers. By detecting the browser the user is using, we can hide the technologies that are not needed by their browser.
In general we use version 3 browsers as our lowest common denominator. So our websites will function in version 3 browsers and above. If you request it we can produce a text only version of your website that will work in any browser, even the oldest of browsers. This is a rare case though as most people upgrade on a regular basis. If requested we can provide you with compatibility reports for each version (from version 2.0) of Internet Explorer and Netscape Browsers for your website.
However some people do use text only browsers or turn graphics off for quicker browsing. Browsers such as Lnyx, do not support graphics, and remember blind or partially sighted people cannot see graphics. So, a text only version of your site maybe a better use of your resources, as opposed to two versions - one for Internet explorer and one for Netscape.
